Gateway Capital Management (“GCM”) is an investment club managed and funded by students at the University of Richmond. The group seeks to attract top-performing students of all class years who have demonstrated a strong desire to learn more about finance and the financial services industry. The fund implements a 130/30 investment strategy, shorting no more than 30% of the portfolio value and going long using the original portfolio value plus cash received from short sales. Though the fund’s primary focus is investing, it also serves as an informal career mentorship program for its undergraduate members who have daily interactions with upperclassmen members. Alumni relations are an integral aspect of the group’s success as well.
Bobby Piluso (President) is majoring in Business Administration with a double concentration in Finance and Economics. Most recently, he was a summer analyst in the Investment Banking Division of Credit Suisse in New York, where he worked in the Leveraged Finance Origination & Restructuring Group. The summer before, he interned at Point72, a family office hedge fund located in Stamford, Conn. Bobby is also the head-manager of the growth fund for the student managed investment fund. Bobby will be returning to Credit Suisse full-time as a Leveraged Finance Analyst.
Matt Freda (Treasurer) is majoring in Business Administration with a double concentration Finance and Economics. Most recently, he participated in the M&A Boot Camp program at Harris Williams & Co. and served as a Summer Analyst in the Valuation Advisory group at Duff and Phelps. The year prior, Matt gained work experience in lower middle market investment banking as well as wealth management. Upon graduation, Matt will be returning to Harris Williams as an Investment Banking Analyst. In addition to his role in Gateway, he serves as the Head Value Fund Manager in the University of Richmond’s Student Management Investment Fund.
Jeremy Lacy is pursuing a major in Business Administration with concentrations in Finance and Economics. A resident of Richmond, VA, Jeremy spent last summer working as an investment banking analyst at BB&T Capital Markets in Richmond. The previous summer, Jeremy interned as a business analyst as Virginia Commercial Finance (“VCF”), a Glen Allen, Virginia-based company offering commercial lending to small-to-middle market companies. Jeremy is also the General Manager of the Student Managed Investment Fund. After graduation, Jeremy will be returning to VCF to assist the team’s continual development of an early-stage startup company and enhance the growth of its established commercial lending products.
Guillaume Diaz is majoring in Business Administration with a concentration in Finance and a minor in Creative Writing. Guillaume most recently interned at J.P. Morgan in the Investment Banking division covering Power & Alternative Energy companies. The prior summer, Guillaume worked as a risk and portfolio management intern at GE Ventures, the venture capital arm of General Electric. He will be returning to J.P. Morgan full-time after graduation.
Keenan Shepard is a senior undergraduate student in the Robins School of Business pursuing a major in economics with a concentration in finance. Keenan joined Gateway Capital Management as a sophomore. He currently serves as the President of the Sigma Chi Fraternity and has held internships with Bank of America Merrill Lynch in Global Wealth Management in Washington, D.C. and in Equity Capital Markets in New York.
Dan Robert is majoring in Business Administration with concentrations in accounting and finance. Dan spent last year working remotely as an investment banking intern for Dunn Rush & Co., a Boston-based boutique specializing in sell-side M&A advisory for the lower middle market. This past summer, Dan completed a private equity summer analyst position with a Richmond-based family office, Falcon Affiliates. After graduation, Dan will be joining BB&T Capital Markets as an investment banking analyst.
Min An is a junior majoring in Business Administration with a concentration in Finance. In this upcoming summer, he will be working as an Investment Banking Summer Analyst in the Mergers & Acquisitions group at RBC Capital Markets in New York. In his sophomore summer, Min interned in the Corporate Mergers & Acquisition group at Dominion Energy in Richmond, Virginia. Min was born in Seoul, South Korea and grew up in Ellicott City, Maryland.
Michael Elliott is a junior currently pursuing a major in Business Administration with concentrations in Finance and Economics. Michael spent this past summer in Richmond working as an investment banking summer analyst for Marriott & Co Investment Banking, a lower middle market investment bank specializing in mergers and acquisitions (buy and sell-side), capital raises, and strategic advisory. Next summer, Michael will be interning in Washington, D.C. with Raymond James Investment Banking. He will be working within their Defense and Government Services industry group.
Lexi Serek is majoring in Business Administration with concentrations in Finance and Accounting. This past summer, she worked for the Investment Banking Division of Wells Fargo Securities as a summer analyst rotating between their Healthcare and Power & Utilities groups. Prior to her sophomore year, she completed her CFA Investment Foundations certification and spent her summer studying at the London School of Economics. This upcoming summer, she will be joining Barclays Investment Bank as a summer analyst.
Sheldon McMeans is pursuing a major in Economics with a concentration in Finance and a minor in Mathematics. Most recently, Sheldon worked at Old Farm Partners, a fund of hedge funds with offices in Richmond and New York where he performed research and developed operational models for the firm. Next summer, Sheldon will be interning with Barclays in New York in their Equity Research division. In addition to Gateway Capital Management, Sheldon is active in the University’s Finance Society and is an analyst in the University of Richmond ETF Fund covering North America. Outside of finance, Sheldon enjoys spending time outdoors and playing rugby.
Ahkar Phyo is a junior majoring in Biochemistry and Molecular Chemistry. Last summer he interned at the Hackensack University Medical Center in Hackensack, New Jersey as a clinical researcher in the heart and vascular department focusing on drug eluting stents. This summer, he plans to study abroad in Seville, Spain and possibly intern in trading at a hedge fund. Ahkar is also involved in many activities on the University of Richmond campus including United2Heal, resident assistant for a healthcare community, and spends more than 10 hours a week volunteering at local high schools in Richmond and at VCU Medical Center. He has also won the biochemistry and biology department’s sophomore research award. His hobbies include looking at technical analysis, momentum trading, and science trivia.
Lily Shannon is majoring in Business Administration with a concentration in Finance, and a minor in Psychology. Most recently she participated in Barclay’s Sophomore Springboard program and will be returning next summer as a Summer Analyst in Sales and Trading. In addition to being a member of Gateway Capital Management at the University of Richmond, Lily is the treasurer of the Finance Society.
Grant Miclat is majoring in business administration with a finance concentration as well as political science. He currently works as a fall analyst at Marriott & Co., a boutique investment bank located in Richmond, VA. The summer before, he interned at Lowe, Brockenbrough, & Co., a private wealth management firm serving clients in the Richmond area. Grant will be working as a 2019 Summer Analyst in the Mergers & Acquisitions group at BB&T Capital Markets.
Lizzie Reedy is a sophomore pursuing a major in Business Administration with concentrations in Finance and Accounting. Last summer, she reviewed the financial statements of a healthcare company as an audit intern at Deloitte. This summer, Lizzie will be joining Bank of America Merrill Lynch’s Debt Capital Markets group in New York. In addition to Gateway Capital Management, Lizzie plays on the University of Richmond women’s golf team. Recording the lowest freshman scoring average in program history, Lizzie was named the 2018 Patriot League Rookie of the Year and was selected to the 2018 Patriot League First Team All-Conference, Academic Honor Roll, and the Women’s Golf Coaches Association’s All-American Scholar Team.
